Is eSIM still worth it?

If you ask yourself that question, then most likely you know that an eSIM (embedded SIM) is a type of SIM card that is built into a device, such as a smartphone, tablet, or smartwatch. Unlike a traditional removable SIM card, an eSIM is embedded directly into the device’s hardware.

The primary reason for a removable SIM card is to identify you as a network subscriber. It’s necessary to connect you into your carrier’s network. Without the SIM card, your phone wouldn’t know what network to connect to, and the network wouldn’t know that your phone  belongs to a subscriber. You won’t get a phone signal in your cell phone without a SIM card, so you will not be able to place phone calls.

You can use your phone without a SIM card in place, with the caveat that certain network functions will understandably not work. For example, you could still connect to a WiFi network and access the vast majority of internet functions on your phone without a SIM card. However, you can not make phone calls, send SMS messages, or connect to a carrier’s network.

In order to avoid unsecure WiFi connections you could purchase an eSIM to avoid expensive data roaming fees while still allowing access to all relevant SIM information to ensure a successful connection to a mobile network.

eSIMs can support multiple profiles, allowing you to use different carriers or plans on the same device. This can be useful if you travel frequently or have different needs for different situations. You could use it to separate your business account from your personal account for emails and phone calls by switching between those profiles.

eSIM can be remotely provisioned by network operators, allowing for easy activation and deactivation of mobile plans without the need for a physical SIM card. This provides greater flexibility and convenience for users, as they can switch plans or operators with a few simple steps on their device.

Security is always a big issue and eSIM technology provides enhanced security features compared to traditional SIM cards. The built-in tamper-resistant hardware and encryption mechanisms help protect against unauthorized access and cloning attempts, making it more secure for storing sensitive information.

As eSIM becomes more prevalent, it is supported by an increasing number of network operators worldwide. By adopting eSIM technology, you are ensuring compatibility with future networks.

SIM cards are increasingly on their way out, losing importance to eSIM, and newer smartphones such as iPhones and Motorola don’t even have a physical SIM card in the USA.

eSIMs eliminate the need for physical SIM cards, therefore reducing plastic waste. They can be reprogrammed remotely multiple times. There is no need to ship them, which can also reduce carbon emissions.

Using eSIM with the Red Bull MOBILE Data App for roaming offers several advantages over traditional physical SIM cards. Data roaming has become much easier, more efficient and cost-effective with the use of eSIM.

Simply download the Red Bull MOBILE Data app, choose your data plan for your destination, and follow the instructions on how to activate the Red Bull MOBILE eSIM data plan. Your device will prompt you to set up your eSIM, which typically involves selecting a mobile plan and confirming your activation. Once your account is activated you are ready to connect to the world without any basic or roaming fees. You will be able to email, chat, set up video conferencing and use your social media accounts. Connecting with your family and friends around the globe is instantaneous.

Another benefit of an eSIM is that you can access the Red Bull MOBILE Data app wherever you are. So if your travel plans change or you decide to go to a new country simply log in to the app, and choose a new destination and bundle, and you are all set!

It’s important to note that not all smartphones and smartwatches support eSIM functionality. You should check the specifications or consult the manufacturer’s information to confirm whether a specific model has eSIM capabilities. Additionally, availability and support for eSIM may vary depending on the cellular network providers in your region.

You can usually find this information in the device specifications under Settings.

iOS devices: Go to Settings > Mobile Data or Cellular Data, if you have the Add Mobile Plan or Add Data Plan option, your iPhone supports eSIM.

Supported devices include iPhone XS, XR and newer models

Android devices: Go to Settings > Connections > SIM card manager. If you have the “Add mobile plan” option, your smartphone supports eSIM.

The majority of newer Android smartphones are supported including the Samsung Galaxy S20 or newer models, Google Pixel 3 or newer models, Huawei P40 and many more.
