Barcelona is known for its culinary delights, such as tapas and the traditional Catalan dish paella, and is a major economic center as well as a significant trading and port hub.
Managed by the Port Authority of Barcelona, the Port of Barcelona is a major European port with commercial, industrial, and passenger (cruise) facilities. While it’s possible to walk to the city centre, it is not recommended (no sidewalks, dangerous crossings, etc.). The port is a very short drive to the city centre, either by bus, metro, or taxi.
Here are some interesting facts about the Port of Barcelona:
Terminals
The Port of Barcelona has more than 30 diversified terminals, specialised in cargo, passengers and inland terminals.
Out of the 30+ terminals, 7 are international terminals, designed to offer cruise ships the necessary services and with maximum security.
The Port also has the infrastructure and a wide range of regular freight and passenger services to Italy or North Africa through SSS (short sea shipping) and feeders, making it the main connectivity hub between Europe and the Mediterranean.
The cruise terminals can be roughly categorized into 3 main locations.
Adossat Pier
Terminals A, B, C and D, E and H are based at the Adossat Pier and are furthest away from the city centre. Terminals D & E are for Carnival cruises only, terminal H is for MSC cruises, and the new terminal G (currently being built and completed in 2027) will be for Royal Caribbean’s ships.
There are cruise shuttle buses connecting to the World Trade Centre terminals, or a public shuttle bus brings you directly into the city for a small fee.
World Trade Centre Terminals
There are 2 terminals at the World Trade Centre (WTC) terminal, called North and South terminal.
Sant Bertrand Terminal is considered part of the World Trade Centre terminal. It is not used for cruise ships but for ferries between Barcelona and the Balearic Islands.
If your cruise line docks at this terminal, you could get on the hop on hop off tourist bus if you want to start exploring the city right away, or take a public bus.
Port Vell
This terminal is located closest to the city centre and mainly used for smaller vessels and ferries. You can walk right into the city centre without a shuttle.
Private vehicles are allowed to drop off or pick up passengers and luggage, however, parking is not allowed directly at the terminal. Parking lots are available close to the port area and surroundings.
