Most cruise lines offer WiFi packages, which tend to be expensive. Streaming platforms such as Netflix use a lot of data and even if you have an unlimited data plan on your cell phone, the connection might be spotty at sea or doesn’t work at all.
Depending on your streaming settings, it could take 1GB for one hour of streaming a movie or TV show in standard definition. You could lower the setting and get up to 4 hours per GB of data. Netflix automatically selects the best video quality based on your internet connection. You can also manually adjust the video quality to a lower tier in the “Account” section on Netflix’s website. Opting for SD rather than HD or UHD can significantly reduce your data usage.
A good way to save data usage with Netflix is to download your movies and shows ahead of time, when connected to your carrier’s data plan or when you have a steady WiFi connection.

In order to ensure proper functionality, you should purchase and install the eSIM before you board your cruise ship.
You will need an internet connection to set up your data plan, therefore it would be advisable to have your plan set up where you have a strong internet signal. The packages are valid for 30 days after activation. When you’ve used up 80% of your data, we’ll let you know — so you won’t get stuck without any data. You’ll get another notification once your data has finally run out.
In the Red Bull MOBILE App you will also see how much data you have already used.
You should switch off data roaming for your primary SIM card to avoid roaming charges.
