Port of Civitavecchia (Port of Rome) – Italy

Port of Civitavecchia is the first Italian port for cruise traffic, the first in Europe, the first in the Mediterranean Sea, and among the busiest in the world, with approximately 3.33 million passengers per year.

The Port of Civitavecchia, located about 74 kilometers northwest of Rome, is often called the “Port of Rome” because it serves the city and handles significant passenger and cargo traffic, including cruises and ferries to destinations like Spain and Sardinia.

The Port is divided into two macro areas with different market dynamics. The southern part of it is dedicated to tourism, yachting and cruises. The northern part is the area for commercial traffic, fishing and cabotage.

There are three main terminals divided by service category (ferries, cruises, service centre):

Transportation & Parking

Rome Cruise Terminal is the main terminal for cruise lines for boarding and disembarkation. You can reach the port from the Civitavecchia train station with the local buses “Argo”. Buses stop at the service centre. There is a free shuttle service to/from the docks to the service centre.

From the airport, the fastest and easiest way to get to the port is an authorized cab service.

If you are driving to the port, parking facilities are available near the cruise terminals and are connected to the shuttle bus service.

Getting to Rome

Most cruise passengers take advantage of the close proximity to Rome to explore the city.

The easiest and fastest way is getting a cab. It will take about 1 hour and 20 minutes.

You can also reach Rome by train from the Civitavecchia Station, which is a 20 minute walk, or a 6 minute bus ride from the service centre.

Here are some tips for sights & excursions, if you spend extra days in Rome ahead or after your cruise:

Sights & Excursions

Colosseum

The Colosseum is a large amphitheatre that housed 65,000 spectators in Roman days. Visit the stands, the arena and the underground spaces of the largest Roman amphitheatre. It is considered one of the seven modern wonders of the world.

Trevi Fountain

‘Fontana di Trevi’, or Trevi Fountain, is probably the most famous fountain in the capital of Italy and perhaps even the world. The baroque fountain was built in the 18th century and displays the god of the sea, Neptune on his chariot. Tossing a coin in the Trevi Fountain means the person throwing the coin will ‘one day return to Rome’.

Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel

In the Vatican Museum you can visit 54 richly decorated rooms with art collections varying from Roman objects and religious relics to countless paintings. Another highlight is the famous Sistine Chapel with lovely frescos by Michelangelo that is mostly known as the site of conclave when a new pope is elected.

Forum Romanum & Palatine

The Forum Romanum was the centre of the ancient Roman Empire. Walk past Roman excavations and the archaeological park full of old temples, arches, market halls and other important buildings built by different emperors. Next to the Forum lies Palatine Hill with excavations of imperial residences.

Pantheon

The Pantheon was a temple dedicated to the twelve Gods and to the living Sovran and is the only ancient Roman building that has remained practically intact through the centuries. It was built by Agrippa between 25 and 27 BC.

Tivoli Gardens – Villa d’Este

“Tivoli Gardens” most commonly refers to the gardens of the Villa d’Este in Tivoli, Italy. It is a 16th-century Renaissance masterpiece renowned for its spectacular terraced gardens and hydraulic features. The garden features over 1,000 fountains, grottoes, and other water features that operate using innovative hydraulic engineering.

Internet plans on board cruises and ferries are very expensive and coverage can be spotty. Look into eSIM packages like the one from Red Bull MOBILE and avoid expensive charges.

Let’s talk about roaming charges on your ship. Cruise ships offer internet packages, some starting at $20/day and on some cruise lines you must purchase the package for the full length of your cruise. If you want a one-time 24-hour internet pass, it will be even more expensive. There are different plan options, such as video calls and social media only, or full packages to include streaming movies and music. Each cruise ship company has their own plans and packages, check ahead of time to compare options.

Great news! The eSIM from Red Bull MOBILE is available on cruise ships and ferries with the Telenor Maritime package. Please note, this package will only work on cruise ships and ferries. To purchase a land package please select the destination where you travel to.

Purchase an eSIM from Red Bull MOBILE Data and never worry about running out of data on your cruise again!

So, how does it work to get data on your cruise ship and avoid roaming charges?

It works with an eSIM from Red Bull MOBILE for land packages and Telenor Maritime for cruise ships and ferries.

Red Bull MOBILE is an app-based data plan for travelers. With the use of eSIM, it allows you to surf from anywhere around the globe. Whether you’re sightseeing, base jumping, climbing, or in fact cruising.

That means you never again have to worry about running out of data for your internet connection wherever you might travel, when you need it the most or about unexpected fees and invoices.

All you have to do is download the app, register, search for – or scroll down to your destination or the Telenor Maritime option, and purchase your package. Please note, the Telenor Maritime package will work on cruise ships and ferries only! To purchase a land package please select the destination where you travel to.

In order to ensure proper functionality, you should purchase and install the eSIM before you start your trip or board your cruise ship. You will need a steady internet connection to set up your data plan, therefore it would be advisable to have your plan set up where you have a strong internet signal. The packages are valid for 30 days after activation. When you’ve used up 80% of your data, we’ll let you know — so you won’t get stuck without any data. You’ll get another notification once your data has finally run out.

In the Red Bull MOBILE App you will also see how much data you have already used.

Where does the Telenor Maritime package work?

The Telenor Maritime package currently works on many ships and ferries.

You should switch off data roaming for your primary SIM card to avoid roaming charges. Since streaming movies, videos and TV shows use a lot of data, it is advisable to download these ahead of time to minimize data usage.
