How to get WiFi and stay connected on your camping trip

Camping is a great way to see new places or to disappear into remote areas and enjoy your quiet time. It’s becoming more and more popular and camp-sites are getting more luxurious. However, some sites might not have a strong WiFi signal or might not have one at all.

While many people want to switch off when they go camping and not rely on TV’s, smartphones, or computers, many do not and would rather use their smartphone or watch TV than go stargazing. Heavy social media presence and portable devices where you can download your favourite shows and movies makes it hard for some of us to stay disconnected for a longer period of time. Or you might be self-employed and on a deadline for work and need to upload documents, check emails or some of us just can’t wait to share our experience and want to send pictures to our family back home.

Even with modernization at camp sites it could be difficult to access their WiFi or it might be very slow. So how can you get a good internet connection without relying on spotty WiFi at the campground, on the road or at other stops?

Pocket WiFi

A Pocket WiFi works just like any WiFi device, but it is a lot smaller and portable than your traditional home WiFi router. Unlike the router, Pocket WiFi is designed for use without any location restriction, this way you can stay connected to the internet no matter where your travels may take you.

From a technical perspective, the Pocket WiFi operates using a SIM card. This SIM card connects to a cellular network in the exact same way as smartphones do. Once the device is connected to the internet via a SIM card it gains internet connectivity via the cellular network. Then the device emits a WiFi signal just like your home WiFi does, allowing any of your internet capable devices to connect via WiFi. As a result, these devices can access the internet through the cellular network, maintaining connectivity even while on the move.

Pocket WiFi devices can only be accessed with a password, so only those in your group who are provided with that password, will have a secure and fast internet connection.

You can either purchase a Pocket WiFI and prepaid SIM card or rent a Pocket WiFI and purchase a prepaid SIM card.

Personal Hotspot Connection

If you have an unlimited data plan and your device supports a Personal Hotspot connection this is a good option to stay connected on your smart devices. If your data plan is limited, be mindful of your usage to avoid high roaming charges.

On Apple devices go to ‘Settings” > “ Personal Hotspot”, click “Allow Others to Join” and follow the prompts on your screen.
On Android devices go to “Settings” > “Connections” > “Mobile Hotspot and Tethering”, click “Mobile Hotspot” and share your Password.

There are also other options out there, such as a Satellite Internet Specialist System (way more expensive), or a WiFi Signal Booster.

If you are travelling outside of your own country remember to check if your data plan covers the area you are visiting and your data plan (limited or unlimited).

eSIM

Advantages of eSIM
The easiest and most convenient way to stay connected worldwide is with an eSIM from Red Bull MOBILE Data.
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a type of SIM card that is built into a device, such as a smartphone, tablet, or smartwatch device. Unlike a traditional physical SIM card, which is a small removable chip, an eSIM is embedded directly into the device’s hardware.

One of the key benefits of an eSIM is that it eliminates the need for a physical SIM card slot, which can save space in smaller devices and allow for more streamlined designs. Additionally, eSIMs can be programmed remotely, meaning that they can be activated and configured over the air without the need for physical swapping or installation of a SIM card.

Simply download the Red Bull MOBILE Data app, choose your data plan for your destination, and follow the instructions on how to activate the Red Bull MOBILE eSIM data plan. Your device will prompt you to set up your eSIM, which typically involves selecting a mobile plan and confirming your activation. Once your account is activated you are ready to connect to the world without any basic or roaming fees. You will be able to email, chat, set up video conferencing and use your social media accounts. Connecting with your family and friends around the globe is instantaneous.
