Amsterdam

Here are some interesting and fun facts about Amsterdam:

Country-Area Code: +31-20

Population: 1,1 mio (2024 est.)

Language: Dutch

Currency: Euro

  • Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands and is known for its artistic heritage, elaborate canal system and narrow houses with gabled facades.
  • The Museum District houses the Van Gogh Museum, works by Rembrandt and Vermeer at the Rijksmuseum, and modern art at the Stedelijk.
  • Amsterdam has more bicycles than inhabitants. The city has over 400 km of bike lanes and several storage facilities. Over 20,000 bikes are thrown or disappearing in the Amsterdam canals every year and around 100,000 bikes get stolen. Be careful – bikes have the right of way over both cars and pedestrians. So make sure to stay out of the bike lanes and be careful when crossing!
  • Amsterdam has more canals than Venice and more bridges than Paris with over 165 canals and 1281 bridges. It’s possible to travel 100 kilometres on the water within the city limits. The most popular canals are the Herengracht, Prinsengracht, Keizersgracht. And the most famous bridges are Magere Brug or Skinny Bridge.

Did you know…?

  • The Amsterdam Stock Exchange, which opened in 1602, is the world’s oldest stock exchange and it still operates today.
  • The odd building approach with the very narrow houses has a simple explanation — tax. Back in the 17th century, residents were taxed on the width of their property, so the narrower your home was, the lower your annual tax bill.
