• Antwerp is known as the diamond capital of the world. At Antwerp’s city centre the centuries-old Diamond District has thousands of diamond traders, cutters and polishers.
• In 1531, it built the first real stock exchange in the world. It came at the request of the many traders in the city who wanted a safe place to do business. That stock exchange later served as an example for the stock exchanges of London, Frankfurt and Amsterdam.
• Bookbinder and printer Christophe Plantin founded his Officina Plantiniana in Antwerp around 1550. In 1570, the print house had 16 presses and employed more than fifty workers, and was the world’s largest printing business.
• It has a rich artistic heritage, with famous artists like Rubens and Van Dyck and is also home to the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, one of the largest art museums in Europe.
