Here are some interesting and fun facts about Helsinki, a city situated on a peninsula in the Gulf of Finland. It is also the capital of Finland.

Country-Area Code: +358-9

  • Sauna culture is a big deal in Helsinki, and all over Finland. There are more saunas than cars. No matter if they are modern and sleek, or rustic and wood-fired, they all serve the same purpose: a place to relax, cleanse, and socialise.
  • In 2012, Helsinki was named World Design Capital. Known for modern architecture and furniture, iconic glassware, and colourful prints, they are instantly recognisable around the world.
  • Helsinki has a strong bond with Tallinn, Estonia, one of cultural, economic, and personal exchange. You can take a ferry, which takes just two hours. Imagine exploring Helsinki’s sleek design stores, and next you could be wandering Tallinn’s medieval Old Town with its cobbled streets and fortress walls. All on the same day!
  • The city was established in 1550 by King Gustav I of Sweden, who decided to establish a new trading town on the Baltic Sea. In 1812 Finland was ceded from Sweden to Russia, and the new rulers made Helsinki the capital of the Grand Duchy of Finland. That’s why the identity is a blend of these pasts and street names are still bilingual (Finnish and Swedish). Both empires remain visible in the city’s architecture, culture, and outlook.

Did you know…?

  • Temppeliaukio Church, also called Rock Church, was built directly into solid granite, with natural rock walls forming the interior. Natural light floods through a skylight that encircles the copper dome, creating a calm and otherworldly atmosphere.
  • Built in the mid-18th century by Sweden as a defence against Russian expansion lies Suomenlinna, a sprawling sea fortress spread across several islands. The fortress is no museum piece and around 800 people still live on the islands. There are cafés, workshops, and even a brewery alongside the historic walls making it one of Helsinki’s highlights.
